The GEK TERNA Group subsidiary strengthens its presence in the Romanian market.

TERNA is strengthening its presence in Romania, following yesterday’s signing in Bucharest of the contract for the Filiași – Igiroasa (Lot 2) railway project. The contract was signed by the Romanian National Railway Company (CFR) and the TrackWorks consortium, in which the construction arm of the GEK TERNA Group participates with a 74% stake, together with Alstom Romania. The project’s budget amounts to €380 million.

Lot 2 concerns the design and full rehabilitation of the section from Filiași to Igiroasa, approximately 44 kilometres in length, as part of the broader project for the upgrade of the Craiova – Drobeta Turnu Severin – Caransebeș railway line.

At the end of last March, the consortium had also signed the contract for the first section (Lot 1) of the corridor, from Craiova to Filiași, with a budget of €410 million, in which TERNA participates with a 69% stake. The two sections constitute the Craiova – Igiroasa railway corridor, with a total length of 83 kilometres, the complete design and reconstruction of which has been undertaken by TERNA.

The objective of the project, which has a four-year construction period, is to increase operating speeds to up to 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains, with the capability of accommodating trains of up to 740 metres in length.
