The facility constructed by TERNA was presented as a global success story during Siemens Energy’s global conference.

ATHENS, Greece — The 860 MW natural gas-fired combined-cycle power plant operated by Thermoelectric Komotini S.A. has emerged as a global success story. Built by TERNA, a subsidiary of the GEK TERNA Group, and equipped with Siemens Energy technology, it is the first power plant of its kind worldwide to enter commercial operation.

Against this backdrop, the German energy technology group selected Athens to host the third annual SGT-9000HL Executive Customer Conference. Bringing together Siemens Energy’s senior management and customers from around the world, the conference placed the Komotini combined-cycle power plant at the heart of the agenda, showcasing it as an international success story.

The conference was opened by Karim Amin, Executive Board Member of Siemens Energy and Head of the company’s Gas Services business, while Stathis Natsis, Executive Director for International Business Development at GEK TERNA, delivered a welcome address. During the conference, Siemens Energy President and CEO Dr. Christian Bruch and Mr. Amin highlighted TERNA’s outstanding execution of the project, which was delivered in record time compared with power plants of similar complexity worldwide.

On the second day of the conference, Siemens Energy’s senior executives and conference participants visited the power plant, which can achieve a reduction in carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions of up to 3.7 million tonnes annually compared with a conventional coal-fired power plant.

“Building a power plant is a multi-year undertaking, from the initial design and manufacturing of the key equipment components to construction and commissioning. For such a project to succeed, the relationship must be built on trust, close cooperation and a shared commitment. This is why having a partner such as TERNA, with whom we can work closely over many years, is particularly important,” said Dr. Bruch.

“For the first time, Siemens Energy invited its leading customers from around the world to Athens for this conference, with the aim of presenting the Komotini power plant, built by TERNA, which has now become an international benchmark. In essence, Siemens Energy has recognised TERNA as one of the world’s leading EPC contractors for large-scale, state-of-the-art power generation plants,” said George Peristeris, Chairman and CEO of the GEK TERNA Group.

It is also worth noting that, on the sidelines of the conference, Mr. Peristeris and Dr. Bruch held a private meeting, during which they reaffirmed their intention to further strengthen the strategic partnership between the two groups through future energy transition projects across the wider Southeastern European region.
