Amfilochia is Greece’s largest pumped storage project, consisting of two plants—Agios Georgios and Pyrgos—with a combined energy storage capacity exceeding 14 GWh. Six reversible turbines provide 680 MW of generation capacity and 730 MW of pumping capacity, enabling effective balancing of renewable energy production and peak electricity demand. Owned by Terna Energy S.A., the project is designed for high efficiency, rapid response, and full environmental compliance, strengthening grid reliability and supporting the integration of renewable energy sources.

The Amfilochia Pumped Storage System represents the largest investment in energy storage in Greece. It has been designated by the European Union as a Project of Common Interest (PCI 2.9) since October 2013 and was classified as a Strategic Investment in 2014.
