GEK TERNA builds the school in Damasi of Tyrnavos in record time

A responsible action worth more than 1.2 million euro

This year, students of the Primary School in Damasi of Tyrnavos will return to school with a smile, since on their first day of school, they will enter a brand new modern and safe school.

The old school that was built in 1938, collapsed at the great earthquake of March 3rd, 2021. The Prime Minister addressed a call to construct a new school, to which GEK TERNA Group responded immediately. After months of highly intensive work, a new, state of the art school opened its doors and welcome students and teachers.

Six months of intensive work

The approval to demolish the remaining of the old building, the demolition work itself as well as the removal of the materials had already been completed by March 18th and the license of the building designs was issued in early May. By the beginning of June, the foundation of the new prefab school building was constructed while cells and slabs were installed, followed by the construction of the roof, which was completed at the end of June. At the same time a metal hall building for multiple purposes and the gym shed were constructed in July ang August. During the first days of September, the whole structure was completed with the bricklaying, electromechanical works, hydraulic and sewerage system, floors and plasterboard installation, coatings, paints, and window frames. The construction of sidewalks, the asphalt paving, the green space, and the surrounding area's overall configuration were also completed at the beginning of September. The whole project was assigned to Armos Prefabrications S.A.

Eighty people, engineers, wielders, drivers, craftsmen builders, labourers, electricians and plumbers, using excavators, loaders, trucks, cranes, hydraulic hammers, barrels and concrete pumps, water lorries and asphalt pavers, teamed up and worked hard to deliver on time a quality and technically perfect project in an extremely tight schedule.

Tyrnavos’ Mayor, Mr John Kokouras, thanked all the above, since GEK TERNA’s people went the extra mile aiming at offering the joy of initiating the new school year in a brand new, contemporary, and safe establishment to pupils and their parents that had only recently experienced great hardship.

Corporate Social Responsibility

At GEK TERNA Group, we approach all CSR actions with a great sense of duty. Utterly dedicated to human values, the environment and Greece, we are giving back a part of the value we create thanking local communities, the State, and the society for the opportunity we are given through their acceptance, to create value to each and every one of our stakeholders.

The Group stands by society through a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility programme which includes long-term activities and sponsorships. However, social sensitivity must also include the unexpected. This is the reason why GEK TERNA Group acts over and above its program, responding and acting quickly where needed. This was also the case with the pandemic, during which the Group donated ICU equipment and supplies to reference hospitals and health centers in the capital and other regions of the country. As with converting the Souda 115th Combat Wing military airport into a fully green facility. This was also the case in the recent devastating forest fires as well as the case in the Damasi School.
